The History of Cars

12 Diamond Project

Located at the Gatos Theater

In this project, you will be learning about the history of cars. You will see an introduction powerpoint and video and then you will be reading a very cool book that also has some very cool easy to make models. After making a few models, you will create a basic timeline on the history of cars using what you learned in the book. Finally, you will create a car dealer in Montessori City, creating at least 5 for sale cars!

Please note: This project requires a book that can be purchased and delivered via Amazon Prime in a couple days. There are also used versions the book available but they take longer to be delivered. You may want to give some time for this project if using the used copies of the book.

To begin with, let's get an overview of the history of the automobile and how it is had affected the world. Download the powerpoint to the right and read it over.

Download the powerpoint above.

Download the question sheet about the powerpoint above. Answer the questions either by typing in the answers or printing out the sheet, writing your answers and uploading it in your folder on Google Drive. Click to the right to download the file.

Next, I want you to take a look at a video about the first car invented. This video is about 9 minutes long.

Next, we will be using a really fun book to look at the history of cars. It is called Cars: A Complete History. It not only includes a history of the autobobile, it has some very fun paper models that can be created.

As mentioned above, this book can be purchased and delivered in a couple of days via Amazon Prime, if your family has a membership. Here is the link: Amazon Prime

Another way to get it is to buy it used. You may want to do another Minecraft Montessori project while you wait, if you are ordering it this way.

Once the book arrives, you will see it is quite large. I don't expect to read it cover to cover. Look through and find the topics you are most interested in. Also, keep an eye out for dates. You are going to use this book to create the timelines in Step 6.

I'd also like you to create at least 2 of the car models, take a photo of what you created and upload it to your folder on Google Drive.

Please note that we also used Tiki-Toki for timelines in the baseball history project.

Next you are going to create an online timeline of dates in automobile history using the website Tiki-Toki. Now the site is pretty easy to use but it may be helpful to see a quick video about how to use it. Click on the video to the right to see a video of how the website works.

Now as mentioned in the video above, to create a timeline you will need to sign up for a free account using Tiki-Toki. You should check with your family first to see what email is the best one for you to use in signing up.

To sign up, go to and click on "free sign up" in the top right-hand corner.

Here are the requirements for your Car History timeline on Tiki-Toki.

*You should have at least 10 events/dates on your timeline. You can add events with a single year event such as

1968: Seatbelts first required in automobiles.

Or even better, an exact date such as October 1, 1908, Henry Ford debuted the first production Model T Ford

*Each of your timeline events should have at least one picture. You can find pictures for the events in your timeline with an internet search pretty easily.

*You can make your timeline even fancier such as using the 3D function or by adding videos. But you should at least have the requirements mentioned above.

Be ready to present your timeline to Teacher Matt.

The last step is to create a Car Dealership in Montessori City. Here are the requirements:

*It has to have a building in which at least 2 new cars are displayed and there are desks for the car dealers to sit at.

*It should have a lot outside in which at least 5 cars are displayed

*It should have a garage area where mechanics work to make repairs

See some of the examples below to help with your design...

*Read the powerpoint on Automobile history and answer the questions in the Word document

*Watch the video about the first car

*Read parts of the book, Cars: A Complete History and make 2 of the models and find dates for the timeline in Step 6

*Create your timeline in Tiki-Toki

*Create your car dealership

Present everything to Teacher Matt
